DeSantis - “I will sign E-Verify into law here in the state of Florida”

E-Verify is an internet based service overseen by the federal Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration. It allows employers to check the identity information of new hires to see if they are legally eligible to work.

(Excerpt)

TALLAHASSEE — Defying Florida's most powerful industries — agriculture and tourism — Gov. Ron DeSantis plans to make good on his campaign pledge to require all businesses in the state to use the federal E-Verify database to assure that new hires are legally eligible to work in this country.

But getting E-Verify through the Legislature — and a related bill barring so-called 'sanctuary' policies, another favorite with the GOP voting base — could prove challenging for the new governor.

“With the base, it's the number one issue,” said Florida Republican Party Chairman Joe Gruters. “We've got sanctuary cities legislation through the House before,' Gruters added. 'E-Verify is certainly on the governor's list, but it could be a big lift.”

E-Verify and the ban on sanctuary cities, where federal immigration laws are loosely enforced by local authorities, have been opposed by Democrats, who view the legislation as targeting minorities. Other opponents to the E-Verify legislation already are gearing up. Within the Legislature an unusual coalition is uniting against E-Verify.

Republicans command sizable majorities in both the House and Senate. But industries opposed are major contributors to the state Republican Party and individual lawmakers' campaigns, which typically earns them influence on issues.

Twenty states, including Florida, require E-Verify for some employers. But only four states currently make all employers use it.

"By the content of their character" - Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2019

"I will fight for you with every breath in my body and I will never, ever let you down. America will start winning again."

JANUARY 20, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C.

"For too long, a small group in our nation’s Capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost.

Washington flourished – but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered – but the jobs left, and the factories closed.

The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories; their triumphs have not been your triumphs; and while they celebrated in our nation’s Capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land.

That all changes – starting right here, and right now, because this moment is your moment: it belongs to you. It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America.

This is your day. This is your celebration. And this, the United States of America, is your country."

President Trump's support among Hispanic American voters has soared as he is refusing to buckle to pressure on the border wall. In the latest NPR/Marist/PBS Poll, about 50 percent of Hispanic American voters this month said they approve of the job Trump is doing in the middle of the government shutdown. This is a 19 percentage point increase from last month, when only about 31 percent of Hispanic voters said they approved of Trump.

January 18 marks the 46th annual March for Life held in Washington, D.C.

UPDATE:

*************

"They are Republicans and Democrats, religious and secular, feminists and those who shrug off the label. It’s a march for women, by women."

The rally champions life, especially of the unborn, by challenging Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court case that legalized abortion. Each year, the march boasts high-profile speakers and attracts up to hundreds of thousands of marchers – young, old, men, and, yes, women.

The march calls attention first to the humanity of the unborn. But that’s why it’s also a women’s march: the event values all persons equally from their conception, whether male or female.

An Aug. CBS/Refinery29 poll revealed 72 percent of millennial women are likely in favor of abortion restrictions.

Volkswagen to create 1,000 new jobs in Chattanooga expansion

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

Remember that White House meeting with the big four German automakers [back on December 4th, 2018] that mainstream media ignored? .. Yeah, THAT one.

Well, combine that US/trade White House meeting with the details within the USMCA (formerly known as NAFTA) auto-sector; mix it up a little with the initiatives and incentives for Trump’s industrial vocational apprenticeship training; give the auto actuaries a little time to crunch the numbers; let the executives settle in…. Then, fast forward a month and currently the big Detroit auto-show is happening.

Voilà … what does Volkswagen announce?

Volkswagen USA @VW

Investing in electric vehicles – and America.

TENNESSEE – Volkswagen announces Chattanooga will be the home to the company’s first electric vehicle manufacturing facility in North America. This will be the company’s second U.S. facility.

The automaker made the announcement Monday morning at the Detroit Auto show. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke, and Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger were all in Detroit for the major announcement. The project represents an investment of $800 million by Volkswagen and the creation of 1,000 jobs in Hamilton County.

“As one of Hamilton County’s top employers, these additional 1,000 jobs will have a lasting impact on the region. I thank Volkswagen for its partnership and also applaud the company for its ongoing commitment to education and workforce alignment, which helps Tennessee build a pipeline of talent for years to come,” Haslam said.

Senior Trump Official: "I Hope A Long Shutdown Smokes Out The Resistance"

"The Daily Caller is taking the rare step of publishing this anonymous op-ed at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose career would be jeopardized by its disclosure. We believe publishing this essay anonymously is the only way to deliver an important perspective to our readers."

"On an average day, roughly 15 percent of the employees around me are exceptional patriots serving their country. But 80 percent feel no pressure to produce results. If they don’t feel like doing what they are told, they don’t. Most of my career colleagues actively work against the president’s agenda. This means I typically spend about 15 percent of my time on the president’s agenda and 85 percent of my time trying to stop sabotage, and we have no power to get rid of them ..

Until the shutdown.

Due to the lack of funding, many federal agencies are now operating more effectively from the top down on a fraction of their workforce, with only select essential personnel serving national security tasks. President Trump has created more jobs in the private sector than the furloughed federal workforce. Now that we are shut down, not only are we identifying and eliminating much of the sabotage and waste, but we are finally working on the president’s agenda."

The Return of American Might

"The United States, appearing to be disorderly, its establishment and media at war with the occupant of the White House, is demonstrating almost effortlessly how illusory is the idea that any other country or group of countries can challenge its pre-eminence among the world’s nations."

(Excerpt)

The economy of the United States is astoundingly strong: full employment, an expanding work force, negligible inflation and about three per cent economic growth. In the eight years of president Obama, the United States lost 219,000 manufacturing jobs; in the two years of Trump, the country has added 477,000 manufacturing jobs.

Every U.S. president starting with Dwight Eisenhower has bewailed American dependence on foreign oil. Foreigners then supplied 10 per cent of America’s oil, a figure that rose to 60 per cent under president Obama, and no one has done anything about it, until the past two years, when oil production has been sharply increased and reliance on oil imports has been sharply cut, on its inexorable way to zero.

China has replaced the U.S.S.R. as principal rival to the U.S., but now has no ideological distinction, as well as, in replication of the Soviets, no institutions that function except the army. It is clear that China is feeling the heat of American tariffs. The United States will not be the world’s premier chump anymore. The most enthusiastic support the United States is receiving in its trade stance with China is from China’s neighbours, from India to Japan.

And there is Europe. France has elected a complete outsider as president and the brave new regime has been humbled and defiled by the imperishable Paris mobs. Mighty Germany, its governing coalition almost worn threadbare by the imprudent admission of a million desperate Middle Eastern and African refugees, has delivered itself over to energy dependence on the feeble gangster-state of Russia while cutting its NATO contribution to half of what it had promised.

The world may try to pretend otherwise, but however the domestic political tides of America may flow, North Korea is on its best behaviour, the ayatollahs are quaking in their voluminous raiment, and all America’s trade partners, including Canada and China, are accepting what amounts to unilateral renegotiation by the U.S

Robert Eugene Ford - An American Man

Robert Eugene Ford died on Dec. 22, 2018. He was 74.

The City of Port Orange will be faced with the daunting task of filling the seat left vacant by the death of long-time Councilman Robert “Bob” Ford. The City Council has the option of appointing someone to fill the seat of the long-time community leader, and was expected to set a special election in its meeting Jan. 8. Mayor Don Burnette said he would like citizens to be able to fill the seat with someone they like as quickly as possible.

“Whoever fills that seat will have very, very large shoes to fill,” the mayor said. “Hopefully we will find someone who is qualified, we will never find another Bob Ford.”

“Bob was a servant leader that always acted in the best interest of the city,” said City Manager Jake Johansson. “His passion for the environment was evident in his push for the linear park and walkway along the waterfront. He was a great police chief, vice mayor, council member and TPO representative. We will miss his presence on the dais and in our lives.”

Councilman Ford was born Feb. 11, 1944, in New York City. He initially studied for the priesthood, but switched to criminology. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology (magna cum laude) at Niagara University and earned master's and doctoral degrees in sociology at the University of Illinois.

Following graduate school, Mr. Ford taught criminology at the State University of New York-Buffalo. He left full-time academia to become the third in command at the Erie County Sheriff’s Department in Buffalo, N.Y., until he was selected as Commissioner of Central Police Services for Erie County.

According to his wife, Marilyn Ford, “Bob missed street-level policing and came to the Port Orange Police Department in 1986. He was police chief through January 1999 and then director of police Services for the city until August 1999.”

She added, “Upon retirement from policing, Bob turned to his other career love -- education. Bob taught criminal justice and research at the University of Central Florida until 2016. His broad experience in policing and research as well as his gift of gab served him well in the classroom. He was known as a professor who could distill the most complex idea via a simple example -- and often in a few pithy sentences.”

Ms. Ford also noted he consulted for the International Association of Chiefs of Police for more than 20 years, and was “probably the foremost expert in the nation on police manpower and staffing.”

While at UCF, he and a colleague secured a U.S. State Department grant to assist a city in Russia with learning community policing. He conferred with police in Austria, Germany, Italy, Uruguay and Turkey, and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy of Associates in Quantico, Va.

Councilman Ford first ran for Port Orange City Council in 2010.

“Just as when he was police chief, Bob strove to be accessible to his constituents,” Ms. Ford said. “He fielded calls at home and citizens would often seek him out when he was gardening. Bob emphasized accountability, both fiscally and in decision making. He believed 'good government' meant restraint on regulation and he saw the role of local government to ensure a safe community with responsive managers and leisure services for citizens of all ages. He was a gentleman and a scholar. And just how I like my police, brave but erudite and kind.”

Mr. Ford is survived by his wife of 34½ years, Marilyn. He has two adult children, Shannon and Kerrie. In lieu of flowers, Councilman Ford wanted donations to be made to the Robert Ford Memorial Fund, P.O Box 2008, Niagara University, NY 14109, which benefits students of his alma mater. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange.

City flags will remain lowered on city properties through Sunday, Jan. 13.

Read - Declare an Emergency

(Excerpt)  In the long run, history will validate Donald Trump's stand on a border wall to defend the sovereignty and security of the United States. Why? Because mass migration from the global South, not climate change, is the real existential crisis of the West. The American people know this, and even the elites sense it. The whole Western world is worried about its borders as issues of immigration and identity convulse almost every country.

Trump's portrait of an unsustainable border crisis is dead on: In the last two years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records, including those charged or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes and 4,000 violent killings.

"America's southern border is eventually going to be militarized and defended or the United States, as we have known it, is going to cease to exist."

UPDATE:

Reggie Singh, whose brother Ronil Singh was gunned down by a suspected illegal immigrant, weighs in on the battle over border security and describes the pain his brother’s death has caused his family.  Mr. Singh was seated next to President Donald Trump during the border briefing.

The National Emergencies Act grants the president broad authority to declare emergencies, and several federal laws then could clear a path for the White House to move ahead with building a wall.

One statute, 33 U.S. Code § 2293 - "Reprogramming during national emergencies," permits the president to "apply the resources of the Department of the Army’s civil works program, including funds, personnel, and equipment, to construct or assist in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of authorized civil works, military construction, and civil defense projects that are essential to the national defense."

Another law, 10 U.S. Code § 2808 - "Construction authority in the event of a declaration of war or national emergency," permits the secretary of defense, in a presidentially declared emergency, to use "funds that have been appropriated for military construction" for the purpose of undertaking "military construction projects."
