A straw poll was conducted at this weekend’s 2021 Western Conservative Summit at the Centennial Institute, which is Colorado Christian University’s public policy think tank. The following are the somewhat surprising results:

Ron DeSantis — 74.12%

Donald Trump — 71.43%

• A parent-led rebellion against Critical Race Theory is storming school boards across the country and demanding accountability for what is being taught to American children.

• At least 165 local and national groups have formed to combat Critical Race Theory (CRT) instruction in schools across the U.S., an NBC analysis found.

• Many of these groups were founded by parents appalled to discover what was being taught to their children. Their advocacy has launched small town CRT debates onto the national stage, prompted anti-CRT legislation from Republican lawmakers and more.

Governor DeSantis - Full pardons for all Floridians facing criminal or civil penalty for disobeying local COVID-19 restrictions and mandates through Executive Order.

DeSantis pointed to former gym owners Mike and Jillian Carnevale as examples of Floridians who have faced criminal penalties, including possible jail time, for not complying with local mask mandates at their former business in Broward County.

The couple had operated a gym, now shuttered, and disobeyed Broward County mask rules. He was handcuffed and arrested 3 times for not enforcing facial coverings during strenuous exercise. She was also arrested.

“Floridians like Mike and Jillian Carnevale should have never faced criminal charges for not requiring masks in their business. We took action to reject the overreach of local authorities through unnecessary and unscientific mask mandates. No business should face economic ruin and be punished for alleged violations of local orders that are unreasonably restrictive of rights and liberties. Let's focus on the real criminals," said DeSantis.

 . Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott ..

.. announced that state officials are making a major down payment on a border wall that is going to be built for the state to help respond to Joe Biden’s border crisis.

Abbott directed Bryan Collier, Executive Director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, to “transfer $250 million in General Revenue to the Disaster Fund within the Trusteed Programs within the Office of the Governor” for “a down payment to begin design and construction of physical barriers on voluntarily donated private and public lands that border this state and Mexico.”

• As a precaution against the COVID-19 pandemic, the December party election was conducted in a Zoom videoconferencing meeting, and technical problems left some voting Democratic precinct committee members unable to cast ballots that night.
• 12 ballots were later allowed to be cast provisionally but were then discounted by Thripp.
• Ahead of a scheduled vote before the Florida Democratic Party Judicial Council in January, both sides agreed those 12 provisional ballots should have been tallied. (according to documents provided to The News-Journal)
• 62 Democratic precinct captains — largely supportive of Thripp — had submitted oaths that were invalid. The oaths had been notarized online by a notary who was not authorized to do so.

On Facebook, some posts made reference to going backward and sticking with a status quo that has seen Volusia Republicans overtake Democrats in registrants in recent years while sweeping the 2020 legislative races. 

“I'm furious,” said Travis Henville, former communications director for Volusia Young Democrats. “The old guard wasted six months of all of our time in an attempt to cling to power (after presiding over a decade's worth of increasingly extreme Democratic losses) and prevailed on a technicality .. no one I know thinks some minuscule notarization oversight justifies overturning the result.” 

Henville said some Volusia progressives are considering reviving the Daytona Beach chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.
